What's gotten into Dmitry Orlov? Are we seeing the young defensemen turning into the player the Capitals hoped he would be when they drafted him 55th overall in the 2009 NHL entry draft? It appears so...

There is a sentiment among Capitals fans (including myself) that  Oates made a mistake in leaving Orlov buried in the AHL so long this season. The potential was always there and the Capitals defense has always left something to be desired.

Orlove has the chance to be a difference maker. When you talk about Orlov you're talking about a guy who is:

  1. An above average skater
  2. A threat to score from anywhere on the ice (as the video at the bottom proves)
  3. Someone who has the tools and size to continue to grow into a solid top-4 pairing two-way defenseman
  4. More importantly a person who has developed on ice chemistry with Mike Green

I'm thrilled that with Erskine's return, and that he was placed on the third lien pairing where he belongs. This ensured that Orlov will continue to get the top-4 minutes that he rightly deserves.

Just look at this play this week: His play in the defensive zone has been solid again this week (even Oates confirmed this in an interview), he scored a rocket goal, and has been amazing at skating the puck out of trouble and creating good breakout passes.

It's great to see Orlov finally coming into his own He proves it's never too late (especially when you're only 22)
